First Biodegradable Car Can Go In Curbside Garbage

The green revolution is in full swing at every automaker in the world. More and more recyclable parts and sustainable materials are appearing in new models. A group of designers in the Philippines have taken that a hundred steps beyond by building the world's first biodegradable car.

Kenneth Cobonpue and Albrecht Birkner set out to create a car to symbolize the need to reduce waste in the world's largest industry. Dubbed ''The Phoenix'', their concept car has a body and interior that are made of bamboo, rattan, nylon and as little steel as possible. The vehicle will be powered by a small electric engine.

While this new concept car has a bit of appeal, is it practical? After all, how will bamboo stand up to a crash even at low speeds. If the stuff patio furniture is made is any indication, you might as well be driving a car made of bubble wrap. At least then you can giggle when the bubbles burst. Sure, poking fun at this car is easy, but the intention is solid and commendable.
