Fisker Karma's Official EPA Numbers Disappoint
After years of anticipation the Fisker Karma has finally gotten its
official EPA fuel economy rating, clearing the way for sales to
begin. The results are a shocker given the company's claims to
date.
The Karma is officially rated at 52 MPGe. For comparison, the Nissan Leaf is set at 99 MPGe. The company had been claiming close to 68 mPGe for some time and saying that the car had an all electric range of 50 miles. The EPA set the effective all electric range at just 32 miles. Once the Karma switches over to gasoline the numbers get horrific; 20 mpg. What kind of green alternative is this car?
To be fair, the Karma is a luxury brand. The cars that it is designed to compete with all get about the same mpg without the all electric bonus. The demographic projected to buy a Fisker Karma will not be needing subprime auto loans to do so. These are high income buyers, and we have to wonder whether they'll give two hoots about poor gas mileage. After all, if you can pay $98,000 for a car, what does a few extra gallons of gas matter?
