How Long Does It Take A Hybrid To Pay Off Its Extra MSRP?

toyota-camry-hybrid.jpgWhen hybrid cars first debuted, their MSRP was astronomical compared to their gasoline counterparts. Today, there are more hybrids available and their MSRP have come down. So, how long does a hybrid take to make up for the additional upfront money in gas savings? Here are a few examples.

  • Kia Optima Hybrid...6 years
  • Toyota Camry Hybrid...6 years
  • Hyundai Sonata Hybrid...10 years
  • Volkswagen Passat Hybrid...10 years
  • Ford Fusion Hybrid...8 years

There is nothing to compare the Toyota Prius to, but if you stack it up against the Camry, it would pay off its additional MSRP in three years.

Why does it seem to take so long to have a hybrid pay off? Four cylinder gasoline engines are offering improved mpg. Additionally, gas prices have been dropping. When that short term trend reverses, hybrids will pay off sooner.

Thanks to the guys at Buy Here Pay Here Georgia for this tip. Yes, they may be trying to convince people to buy older compact fuel-efficient cars instead of brand new hybrids, but the facts are the same.
